CAPACITY BUILDING

  • Our Capacity Building program links young men and women in conservation to partners, stakeholders, institutions that can offer them bespoke capacity building opportunities in terms of technical, administrative and formal educational training programs.

Project 1: Picnic Conversations on Conservation (PiCCs)

One of our approaches to engaging youth and women is through our fun and interactive forum, dubbed Picnic Conversations on Conservation (PiCCs). During these sessions, the participants have an opportunity to share their ideas and experiences in conservation, and how to engage in solution-based conversation, while directly interacting with wildlife in different ecosystems. We have set our sights on identifying, nurturing, and inspiring the next generation of conservation movers and shakers, entrepreneurs, and decision makers, through these forums.

Impact

Since 2019, the PiCCs forums have engaged over 200 young men and women from across the country. With the interest from youth across the country growing exponentially, there are already plans brewing to expand the forum’s outreach to all the counties across Kenya.

Include pictures of PiCCs and include captions:

  • Oloolua 2019
  • Narutenoi (Wild About Life)
  • Masai Mara PiCCs
  • Bonfire PiCCs
  • Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we hosted our first online PiCCs in commemoration of World Lion’s Day 2020

Project 2: Partnerships and linkages

Our partnerships are a reflection of our passion for sustainable conservation with a strategic focus on identifying, nurturing and empowering young conservation heroes and leaders especially through innovative means. Through these partnerships, we strive to provide youth with opportunities to reap from our partners’ capacity building programs, expertise and mentorship opportunities. We also leverage our networks and partnerships for increased conservation impact and investment. Our main focus points under this project are to establish partnerships and linkages with conservation stakeholders, national and local government; NGOs, CBOs; parastatals, donors and investors with youth/women- call them focus points)

Project 3: Incubation Hub

At Uvumbuzi Africa, we provide access to a virtual incubation hub, to conservation entrepreneurs and start-ups, where we create an environment for them to develop, learn, and access documents and information on how to make their businesses and enterprises successful and sustainable. We also offer guidance on how to structure and prepare documents, administrative aspects of running an organization, and offer our office space for think tanks, exchange of ideas, and networking opportunities.

To find out how to benefit from this project, please fill in the contact form below and if shortlisted we shall require a write up on the initiative/project for us to vet; write a request (email) to use the office/resources in advance pending approval and confirmation of availability. Only two slots a week (first come, first serve basis).

conservation by discovery

This forum has been an inspiration to the formation of youth driven organizations, such as the Isiolo Conservation Trust, (ICT). Uvumbuzi continues to offer ICT support through its programs.

Impact

We have so far been able to sponsor a group of young ladies from Kibra, currently enrolled in a community based tailoring program, where they learn professional tailoring skills and the use of recycling and up-cycling concepts.

Project 4:Civic Engagement on Conservation instead of civic education (proposed name)

means working to make a difference in the civic life of our communities and developing the combination of knowledge, skills, values and motivation to make that difference. It means promoting the quality of life in communities through both political and non-political processes.
